The Fatty Monster is our widebody Nissan R35 GT-R, making around 1,000 to 1,006 horsepower. Built by TRG, a GT-R R35 specialist in Malaysia, it ran 8.75 seconds at Sungai Besi, the first widebody GT-R in Malaysia into the 8s. In Thailand the same car took us into the 7s too.
Why we built a fat, heavy car on purpose
Every time we rolled it out, someone said the same thing. Your car is so fat, so heavy, how can it run so fast? A widebody kit adds material, and weight is the enemy of a quarter mile. The scene says pick one: looks or numbers. My partner wanted the look. I wanted the power. So we built for both and let the timing slip settle it.
How a GT-R R35 specialist in Malaysia builds for 1,000hp
Power was never the hard part. Bigger turbos, matching fuelling, a built engine, and a proper tune on our in-house Mustang Dyno, holding the load and watching air-fuel ratios pull after pull. Get that right and you’re in 1,000hp GT-R build in Malaysia territory.
The GR6 dual-clutch gearbox is where a GT-R build gets hard. It gives up the moment you pass factory power, so we built the Fatty Monster around the gearbox surviving first, the dyno graph second. We run Dodson Motorsport internals and hold roughly 95% of GR6 parts in stock, so a rebuild doesn’t wait months for imports. On this car, GR6 gearbox reinforcement mattered more than the horsepower figure.
Sungai Besi: 8.75 seconds, the number that mattered
First race back was Terengganu, and the surface was rough. The tyres lit up, the car walked sideways instead of hooking, and we still crossed at 9.0 seconds, the fastest widebody GT-R in Malaysia at the time. The target was always an 8.
Sungai Besi gave us a better surface, and this time it hooked. 8.75 seconds, first place, the first widebody GT-R in Malaysia into the 8s. Trophy aside, that number settled the argument.
Thailand: grip that broke a gearbox, then a 7-second run
December 2024, we brought five cars to the Souped Up event in Thailand. Malaysian strips are slippery, so every car we build learns to manage wheelspin. Thailand was the opposite problem: the track was prepped hard and sticky, more grip than we ever see at home. That kind of grip sends the full force straight into the drivetrain, roughly doubling the load the gearbox has to survive. First night, one of our cars split a GR6 casing right open, not a worn gear or a slipping clutch. The aluminium housing itself gave way.
Brackets were the reason. That car had an upper gearbox bracket fitted but no lower one. A second car in our group ran the same surface at the same power with both brackets on, and finished with zero gearbox trouble. One night on that strip found the gap our own checks hadn’t. It’s why we reinforce the GR6 the way we do now.
We fixed customers’ cars first, the only order that makes sense when people have flown their cars in to race. Once those were sorted, we ran ours on testing night and became the first Malaysian team to run a 7-second quarter mile. Best official time: 7.90 seconds, 3rd overall, broken casing and all.
Most owners assume horsepower is what kills a GR6. It’s only half the story. The other half is how hard the tyres bite, and we build for that worst case every time. Planning a serious GT-R R35 build in Malaysia? That’s the part that still matters after the timing slip ends up in a drawer.
Frequently asked questions
How fast is the Fatty Monster widebody GT-R?
Our record pass is 8.75 seconds in the quarter mile at Sungai Besi, the first widebody GT-R in Malaysia into the 8s. In Thailand we became the first Malaysian team to run a 7-second quarter mile, with a best official time of 7.90 seconds for 3rd overall.
Why did the gearbox break in Thailand but not in Malaysia?
Grip. The Thai track was prepped hard, with far more traction than Malaysian strips, which roughly doubled the load running through the drivetrain. The car fitted with only an upper gearbox bracket tore its GR6 casing on night one. The car running both brackets finished the weekend fine.
What makes a 1,000hp GT-R build survive drag racing?
The gearbox, not the engine. The GR6 dual-clutch is the R35’s weak point once you pass factory power. A 1,000hp GT-R build that survives drag racing needs Dodson-grade internals, both gearbox brackets fitted, and a proper custom tune run on a load-bearing dyno.
